Dedicated ServersA dedicated server refers to the rental and exclusive use of a computer that includes a Web server, application software, and connectivity to the net. The server is located in the Web hosting company's facilities. A dedicated server is usually needed for a Web site or sites that have a large amount of traffic typically for thousands of visitors per hour in peak times. The customer who uses a dedicated server may or may not work on the server on the hosting site, it is typical that a customer accesses the server remotely while the Web host maintains the hardware and environment. Web hosting companies provide dedicated server customers with value in the form of Internet connection, security system, and network administration costs.A dedicated server is rented that provides a stated amount of memory, hard disk space, and bandwidth. Certain configurations of dedicated servers can do virtual hosting where a customer hosts their clients on their dedicated server. This should be investigated ahead of time and the control panel for the server should accomodate adding extra domain names with e-mail and allow for File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capabilities for mulitple users with varying permision levels. |
